Careers event

Last night, the medical school organised a careers event for years 3, 4 and 5. The format of the evening involved consultants from various specialties providing a 6 minute talk on why we should choose their specialty to go into. Of all the talks, I was most interested in listening to obstetrics and gynaecology. However, other specialties also caught my eye like emergency medicine but I’m not sure if I’m cut out for that lifestyle.

So the talks involved various specialties including: emergency medicine, general practice, radiology, community peadiatrics, hospital paediatrics, surgery, cardiology, anaesthetic, obstetrics and gynaecology etc…

One of the main things I love about medicine is the flexibility it offers you. Most of the consultants who spoke to us have been in more than one specialty which makes medicine in my opinion the most interesting career to go into. I know that a career in medicine doesn’t seem like the right thing to pursue in current times but the opportunities it offers you to make real difference in people’s lives is something which may be difficult to find elsewhere.
