Rock that body

For those of who have been reading my blog since I started it in the first year of my medical school, you may have been aware of my sister going through a rough patch with her health at the time that I started my journey through medical school. I couldn’t give much away as she didn’t want many people knowing about what she was going through so I had to respect her privacy. But after three years of fighting like a soldier, she’s finally ready to face the world…

At the age of 15, my sister was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. I didn’t know much about the condition at the time and it wasn’t until my sister’s diagnosis that I began to see how common this chronic illness was.

Crohn’s disease is a chronic condition that causes inflammation within the gastrointestinal tract. It’s a lifelong condition consisting of periods of good health and periods of when the symptoms become more active. The most common symptoms that arise are diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain, fatigue, weight loss, mouth ulcers etc…

Seeing my sister go through the initial phase of the disease was tough to watch. She lost a lot of weight and it was heartbreaking to see her in the state that she was in. After a few drug trials and an operation, she has finally started feeling like her old self again and is stronger than ever before. She has had to mature earlier than most teens and if anything, going through this rough patch in her life has brought her and our whole family closer to God.

Even though she’s doing brilliantly, it’s not to say that she won’t relapse again at any time. But after seeing her be a trooper, I know she can handle whatever her body throws at her…

Check out my sister rocking this dance routine!
