Scrub up

After finishing my first week in obstetrics and gynaecology, I have never been more sure that this is the specialty I want to pursue. I’m going to tell you the single day I had in the hospital that helped me make up my mind:

I woke up earlier than I would have done to get to the hospital so that I could meet the patients that I would be seeing in theatre so that I could gain their consent before stepping into the operating theatre. I was asked to scrub into the second operation which was a lot of fun as I managed to see a large fibroid.

In the afternoon, I spoke to someone with gestational diabetes and was then able to watch a caesarean section. Seeing the joy in two people’s eyes as they were handed their baby is something that can’t be described. Being a part of someone starting out their family and reaching an important milestone in their lives made me realise that this is the perfect specialty for me.

Now that I have a full purpose, I am going to do everything I can so that I get onto the specialty training programme that I’m aiming for.
