Fourth year is tough. You can all probably begin to see that as I’m barely even managing to post at least weekly. I do have a good excuses though so hear me out!
Over the next few weeks I have a lot of things to sort out. I’m currently in the process of planning my elective. I’m hoping to my elective in the specialty of either Obstetrics and Gynaecology or Sexual Health. I have applied to Brisbane in Australia as I have family over there that I haven’t seen in years. However, it is quite competitive to get an elective in Australia so I’m not getting my hopes up just yet. I do also have the option of going to South Africa, again I have family over there so it would make my life very simple.
I am also thinking of intercalating next year in London. So I’m hoping to take a year out from medicine to do a Bachelors in either Women’s Health at King’s College or Reproductive and Developmental science at Imperial. So that whole process requires me to write a personal statement; and yes, flashbacks of the torment of having to write one for medical school is coming back to me.
This year we also have to conduct an audit in general practice. So I have been busy with that by trying to collect all the data I need for that. I’m conducting my audit on women over the age of 35 on the combined oral contraceptive pill with a BMI over 30 in general practice. It should be a really interesting audit to do as no one should really be on the pill if they have a high BMI.
Alongside the audit, I also have a health, culture and society coursework to do. Luckily, I’ve been assigned the topic of ‘Medicalisation of pregnancy and childbirth’ and I can’t wait to get my teeth into it!
Unfortunately, a lot of the deadlines of the things above all fall around the same week which makes my life a little bit hectic at the moment…
