My Valentine’s day was filled with the excitement of receiving my acceptance letter to carry out my elective at the Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital in Australia. After waiting (for a really long time), I was finally given the good news of being able to do my placement within obstetrics and gynaecology at this hospital. As you can imagine, I was over the moon when I heard that I got the place.
My uncle, aunty and cousins have a beautiful home in Brisbane and I am so excited to go and visit them. We are basically taking this elective period as a holiday as my mum and sister are also joining me so it is going to be a lot of fun when we go out there.
My instincts have been telling me that I should have looked for a placement in a developing country as that is what I want to ultimately do. However as a student, I also have to think about the cost of things and if I was to go through a company, I would end up spending way more than what I can afford!
The perks of going to Brisbane include not having to pay for accommodation/food/travel and I am pretty sure that my family would want to do a lot of travelling. Something which I am also hoping to do myself at the end of my elective period. I will also be in a hospital that solely caters for the needs of women which will mean that the placement will not just feel like work but I will also thoroughly enjoy myself!
In the meantime, I have a lot of documents to sort out prior to full confirmation of my place on top of revising for my mock exams so I have an exciting few weeks up ahead of me…
